I have been a councillor for over twenty year and during that time I have held a number of positions. My first responsibility, when I first entered the council was as vice-convenor of Economic Development. In the following year I was elected to chair the council’s Environment committee. I served as chair for two terms and was responsible for promoting recycling and introducing the first paper banks to the street of Edinburgh. I also pioneering the containerisation of Edinburgh’ waste which resulted in a measurable improvement to the cleanliness of Edinburgh’s streets.
In the following administration, as Depute Leader of the council I was responsible for social inclusion policy. As chair of the Capital City partnership I was responsible for developing a joint approach to tackling social inclusion and poverty in Edinburgh's four peripheral housing estates. During my chairmanship, unemployment in the estates was reduced to within 5% of the Edinburgh average. Indeed, in South Edinburgh we succeed in reducing it to within 1% of the Edinburgh average.
I have also served a chair of the council’s economic development company which was responsible for the regeneration of Craigmillar.
It has also been my privilege to be elected as both the chair and secretary of the Labour Group on two different occasions.
